Grants Awarded in August 2025

In August, 2025 13 local nonprofits focused on Nelson County needs and opportunities were awarded grants for a total of $68,250.

American Frontier Culture

Our grant supported organized field trips and outreach as part of Frontier’s Trailblazers initiative. The program offers Nelson County school children the ability to experience the Frontier Culture Museum at no cost to teachers, students and schools.

The Bridge Ministry

The Bridge Ministry works in Nelson County to transform the lives of troubled men and their families by providing mentoring, vocational skills, education, counseling, and the relationships they need to bridge the gap from addiction to productive community and family life. The recidivism rate for men who have completed the Bridge Ministry experience is 14%, compared to the Virgina state average of 79% after 5 years.

Foothills Children's advocacy center

NCCF grant supports their program focused on urgent needs of Nelson County children who are experiencing abuse or neglect.

Girl Scouts of Virginia Skyline

Funding will help grow Girl Scout opportunities in Nelson County by providing essential programming, membership, uniforms and campership assistance. The program is known as “Fun with a Purpose”.

Here to stay wintergreen & Blue ridge respite

Our grant assisted Here to Stay Wintergreen in partnership with the Blue Ridge Medical Center and Rockfish Presbyterian Church to make Blue Ridge Respite available for Nelson County residents with dementia or memory loss and provide respite for their caregivers. NCCF funding will help expand programming to three days a week from two and boost marketing efforts to attract participants.

North Branch School

Funding request to contribute to the building of a new classroom structure on the Branch campus in Afton. The new structure will replace a trailer that has been  used for Middle School children since 2003. NCCF funds will be matched by the Perry Foundation.

Nelson County Community Development Fund (NCCDF)

We funded two grant requests to support NCCDF projects. The first grant helped create safe and healthy homes for qualifying low-income Nelson County residents with a focus on the elderly and/or disabled. The second grant will help NCCDF finish building six new low-income housing units in Roseland. The NCCF grant will be matched by the Perry Foundation.

Piedmont Habitat for Humanity

Piedmont Habitat for Humanity’s NCCF grant will be used to fund material costs for affordable homeowner repairs in Nelson County. The program offers subsidized materials for minor repairs for homeowners who participate in an affordable housing option.

Unity in Community Outreach Ministry (UIC)

UIC develops grass roots programs to carry out the mission of helping individuals and families in need across Nelson County. UIC helps with utilities, fuel, food, rent/mortgage, furniture, vision, hearing, and dental medical copays and other basic needs. During 2024, UIC provided financial assistance to 190 Nelson County households.

Rockfish Valley Foundation

Objectives for this grant include Create an Education Committee; reestablish a Science Advisory Council within Nelson County High School; and work with elementary and middle schools to created awareness of environmental education opportunities offered by the Rockfish Valley Foundation.

Sexual Assault Resource Agency (SARA)

Objectives for this grant include Create an Education Committee; reestablish a Science Advisory Council within Nelson County High School; and work with elementary and middle schools to created awareness of environmental education opportunities offered by the Rockfish Valley Foundation.

Virginia Hunters Who Care

Virginia Hunters Who Care offers a program called Hunters for the Hungry that helps address food insecurity in Nelson County. They accept deer made available to the program from local farmers, hunters and Wintergreen as part of their annual culling efforts. The deer is converted to protien rich venison and distributed to those in need through local food pantries. The NCCF grant partially offsets the cost of creating venison portions of a reliable protien source.
