Grants Awarded in February 2025

In February 2025, NCCF awarded 18 new grants for a total of $102,000 to local nonprofits addressing a range of important needs and opportunities within Nelson County.

Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA)

A grant awarded to the Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) of Central Virginia will partially underwrite the cost for a dedicated Nelson County Advocate Manager who works with CASA Volunteers to support court assigned neglected and abused children.

ReadyKids

NCCF provided a grant to ReadyKids to fund in-home visits for prenatal and post birth education and support for new teenage parents without access to independent resources.

Fight Like a Grrrl Club

Fight Like a Grrrl Club will use NCCF funding for self-defense and awareness training targeting women, adolescents, and LGBTQ+ individuals.

“The Mobile Food Pantry in Nelson County distributes nutritious fresh food and healthy staples to low-income residents in your rural county where groceries stores, and food pantries, are often scarce. Thank you for joining us in this important effort.”

Blue Ridge Area Food Bank

“Coming off the pandemic, this service is more and more necessary. We are sincerely grateful for your support of our work.”

Nelson County Community Development Fund

Blue Ridge Area Food Bank & Blue Ridge Medical Center

Blue Ridge Area Food Bank (BRAFB) and Blue Ridge Medical Center (BRMC) received a grant to address food insecurity found with BRMC patients.

Modern Improvisational Music Appreciation

MIMA Music received a grant to underwrite one year music program that will benefit Afton North Branch School and the Nelson Enrichment Club for Seniors in Nellysford.

The Nature Foundation of Wintergreen

NCCF provided funding to the Nature Foundation of Wintergreen to help continue providing hands-on, field-based environmentally focused activities to students at Nelson County schools which promote state standards in science, technology, engineering, arts and math (STEAM).

Piedmont Housing Alliance

Piedmont Housing Alliance received a grant to support elderly residents at Ryan School Apartments by addressing nutritional needs and promoting community engagement.

Nelson County Youth Philanthropy Council

NCCF grant provided funding to Nelson County YPC, who in turn were able to distribute funds directed by high school members of this important youth philanthropy

Central Virginia Legal Aid Society

Central Virginia Legal Aid Society intends to use its NCCF grant to help fund a full-time attorney who will offer legal services for low-income individuals and families in civil matters concerning housing, employment, health, safety, and economic support.

Friends of Woodson’s Mill

NCCF provided a grant to Friends of Woodson’s Mill to help fund development of an enhanced website to draw attention to the mill’s history to raise donations to maintain the mill.

Central Virginia Farm Workers Initiative

The Central Virginia Farm Workers Initiative (CVFWI) received a sustaining grant for healthcare advocacy work performed for H2A migrant workers in the county.

Foothills Child Advocacy Center

The funding from the Nelson County Community Fund to host blood drives in Nelson County is a huge help in providing these life-saving blood products.

American Red Cross

Red Cross of Central Virginia

The NCCF grant funds one Nelson County blood drive during 2025.  The blood drive provides in-depth testing, typing and matching to provide blood for transfusion in people living with sickle cell disease.

The Rector & Visitors of the University of Virginia

A grant was provided to the Rectors of UVA to support a Diabetic Foot Screening Clinic and Education Series in Nelson County during 2025.

Sentara Martha Jefferson Foundation Farm Stands

Sentara Martha Jefferson Hospital was awarded a grant to help fund its Free Fresh Farmstand initiative in Nelson County.

Take Me Home Thrift Shop

Take Me Home Thrift Shop received a grant to help establish a new Community Thrift store. Proceeds from the Thrift Shop are used to help low-income families in Nelson County obtain veterinary services for pets.

Wintergreen Music Festival

Wintergreen Music intends to use a grant to partially fund travel for Johnathon Page (a Nelson County native) to teach LEAD students during the 2025 Wintergreen Music Festival.

Jefferson Area Board for Aging

Jefferson Board for Aging (JABA) plans to use an NCCF grant to fund two new evidence-based courses as part of its FY25 wellness initiative, focusing on exercise and fall prevention strategies.

Global Education Energy Environment

Global Education Energy Environment (Global EEE) received an NCCF grant for a hands-on education experience for Nelson County High School students to construct and race single person electric cars to generate awareness about renewable energy careers.
